Top 5 Website Mistakes

Julian Smout, our Managing Director here at Shropshire's Verve Graphic Design & Marketing, has highlighted the 5 most common mistakes made when producing a website.  Businesses can spend a great deal of time, money and effort on creating their business website, however, a website that isn’t bringing in the right customers, or any customers at all - isn’t worth having!

Some helpful jargon busters

A recent survey by eCommera found that 42.6% of UK consumers buy something online at least once a week. This figure will only get higher as tablets, smartphones and internet enabled TV's spread in popularity.

SEO – The Essentials

There are essentially four key elements that you should be worried about when thinking about an SEO campaign.

Just gaining high search engine rankings does not automatically mean you will convert viewers to you.

Back to the old theme about the way your website looks and the way your potential customers inter-react when they are viewing it. High rankings on search engines will not necessarily gain you conversions into active customers.

Good news from Twitter about analytics

Sharing the content of your website on Twitter can be a very powerful platform, to drive traffic and engagement. Historically measuring the amount of traffic has been difficult because web analytics software has not evolved as quickly as online sharing and social signals.

Twitter have just announced the launch of Twitter Web Analytics, this new tool will allow website owners and their SEO’s to understand how much traffic they are receiving from Twitter and the effectiveness of Twitter onsite integrations.

The three key benefits are:

Jolly Good Move

We are pleased to announce we have just re-launched the Jolly Good Van Hire website. They currently have two branches one near Wrexham and one in Shrewsbury, with a third due to open in Ely near Cambridge in November.

The site has been developed in Word Press and very particular attention (as usual for us) was spent on optimising the site before going live. Verve, web design Shrewsbury, have also been retained on a monthly basis to manage the site for them and continue the search engine optimisation process on an on-going basis.

Hat's off please

Black Hat search engine optimisation tools are unethical techniques used by some so called SEO’s, that will have the opposite effect on your ranking than you hope for. A couple of the methods are keyword stuffing – loading your web page with keywords both in the content and tags, repetition is frowned upon by search engines. Another one is invisible text, where the font colour is set as the same as the background colour, this text is then filled with rich keywords and phrases that if read would be pure rubbish.

Web design and content

Badly designed sites that include a lack of clear and easy navigation, large load-intensive graphics and unnecessary flash, can cause search engine spiders to be blocked from looking at/crawling over your site and more important if your site users cannot easily find what they want quickly, they will go to one of your competitors sites.

These will show exactly which keywords visitors are using to reach your site. These are critical in that they inform your own keyword usage and content and will help you with your search engine positioning.

Numbers of unique visitors

Watch out who you buy from

There are a number of businesses who have had their fingers burnt with Search Engine Optimisation "gurus" making wild claims about what they can achieve. The good ones will never claim they know everything, it is an organic discipline changing all the time and the good ones will say they are learning everyday and adapting their strategies on behalf of clients accordingly.

At Verve we not only provide web design in Shrewsbury, but will help you market your site to create that all important ROI.
