A Month In Search: November 2016

Verves round up in the world of search for November 2016.

Google serves up real-time election results

Once the polls had closed on election day, Google started to return real-time election results right within its search results pages. Google served these results in over 30 languages and although no specific term seemed to trigger these results, common search terms such as ‘election results’ seemed to return real-time results more often than not.

Google Shopping carousel spotted in Youtube for the first time

Google shopping has been integrated into Youtube since May 2015, however users noticed the Google shopping carousel appear for the first time underneath their chosen video. The carousel is showing 4 ads directly below the video and still seems to be in a testing/beta phase at the moment, but we expect to see more of this as Google looks to occupy more real estate for its PPC channel through the Youtube platform.

Google makes official announcements on mobile first indexing

Although mobile first indexing has been a subject talked about in the industry for some time, this month was the first time Google had spoke about the subject in their official blog. Mobile first indexing is a move towards Google’s search engine indexing mobile versions of websites as a priority as opposed to desktop as they do currently. This makes sense considering more searches are performed on mobile than desktop. The official announcement, below, discusses the start of an experimental stage for Google which we don’t think will remain in beta for too long!

“To make our results more useful, we’ve begun experiments to make our index mobile-first. Although our search index will continue to be a single index of websites and apps, our algorithms will eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results. Of course, while our index will be built from mobile documents, we’re going to continue to build a great search experience for all users, whether they come from mobile or desktop devices.”

Adwords price extensions spotted in desktop search results

Back in July 2016 Google brought their Adwords price extension out of beta for mobile-based text ads and recently the extension has been spotted in desktop search results . The price extension allows Adwords account owners to list services or products with a fixed or from price and each product/service in the extension can have it’s own final url meaning the user can be taken directly to that product or service within the advertisers website.
