A brief insight into Quick Response (QR) Codes and how they could be used.
We were recently asked the question – What are those funny bar code things that have started to appear in adverts recently? We thought it may be a good idea to throw a little light on them.
QR codes – or Quick Response codes – are similar to traditional barcodes that retailers use to track product stock levels and price products at the point of sale, the beep noise as the checkout operator scans your items. The key difference between the two is the amount of data they store.
Barcodes are one-dimensional, holding up to 20 numericaldigits, whereas QR codes are two-dimensional matrices that can hold thousands of alphanumeric characters.
Though QR codes are considered a little of a novelty in the West they have been used in Japan for over a decade (originally registered to a subsidiary of Toyota).
